The hammer came down hard on the alligator’s head. I had been watching from a distance, Benjamin’s progress with the souvenir that Daniel had relinquished to his little brother.
It looked like it was still alive, with its mouth open wide, jagged teeth and glassy eyes. I was not sad to see it go, but very intrigued by Benjamin’s zeal to get to the alligator’s eyeballs.
He had tried two other tools in attempting to dismantle it and now he was swinging a hammer at it with all his might! He wanted to be able to ‘behold’ and ‘hold’ the eye of an alligator!
When at last the “eye” was released, Benjamin’s disappointment could be heard…”It’s only a black marble!” We all tried to tell him this, but no one was able to convince him of it.
I wonder if some of our own endeavors to find treasure are not to different from Benjamin’s efforts.
Are we looking in the right places? Do we find ourselves banging away with my own efforts in an attempt to find the treasure of knowing Him, only to find instead our energy’s leaving us weary, with no more value than the black marble Benjamin found?
When we do find Him, in our daily seeking, there is no doubt of what clear vision will do in our lives. We are changed and nothing will ever truly satisfy us – but the real thing.
The reality of HIS presence, will bring fullness of JOY... IN what ever place we might find ourselves.
'Father, give us a SINGLE eye, for YOU. Transform us, as we learn what faith is...'
