Two Marbles

We were visiting friends and my fascinated 6 year old (Benjamin) was playing with their bag of marbles.

He had never played with marbles before – and absolutely LOVED them.

He loved them, too much.

Two weeks later, he stuck his hand in his pocket and slowly pulled out two marbles – and before the little colorful balls could touch the ground, his brother chided him,

“Benny, you got those at the Godfreys!”

The marbles were sent back, with a note. Benjamin did not know of my own plans to buy him a bag of his own.

Wisdom would desire to teach us that there are times when loving something too much, blinds us from the so much more our Father has for us.

Sin is deceitful like that, it robs us of the full enjoyment of the Best Things by substituting the Best for "questionably Good Things"

The value of Best Things is lost through sin's deceitful lure towards "the good."

If we understood the importance of waiting for God's Best, we wouldn't grab so quickly at the first flickering toy (ie our desires and plans).

The BEST Things come to those who wait. "Every good and PERFECT gift comes from the Father of Heavenly lights who does not change like the shifting shadows."

A lot of things look better in the shadows than they do in the full light.

“Our eyes when gazing on sinful objects, are out of their calling and God's keeping.” Thomas Fuller

“God never witholds from His child that which His love and wisdom call good. God’s refusals are always merciful — “severe mercies” at times but mercies all the same. God never denies us our hearts desire except to give us something better.” — Elisabeth Elliot
